Pets with Unusual Looks
The pets on this page really stand out - they have unusual looks that are only available on one or two wild beasts, or only available in one small part of the world.
Bats
White bats are not unique, but they come pretty close. Your only two choices for taming a white bat are both lower level rare creatures. Ressan the Needler isn't too hard to find, but running across Blind Hunter inside Razorfen Kraul is an event!
Bears
Most bear appearances are pretty widespread, but the Diseased Black Bear from the Western Plaguelands is the only place to find this black and green (and oozing!) look.
Boars
There are several unique boar looks available, including the armored boars of Razorfen Kraul and the undead boars of the Eastern Plaguelands. In addition, there are a good many boar appearances that are widespread at low levels but not available in the wild at high levels. (Those aren't listed here, however.)
Undead boars, despite being technically unique, tend to be a more common sight at the side of a high-level hunter because they are the highest level boars in the game.
Carrion Birds
The white two-headed Outland carrion bird known as Trachela is one of two unique carrion birds. During the Burning Crusade beta, Trachela's green mate Torgos could also be tamed, but unfortunately that is no longer true.
The red two-headed carrion bird is not properly unique, but it is found only in one place in the game: in Hellfire Penninsula.
In Patch 2.4.2, Blizzard added the Dire Raven to the carrion bird family. Dire Ravens have a unique model that looks more raven-like than vulture-like. In fact, it is extremely similar to the Alliance non-epic druid flight form.
Cats
There are a number of unique and almost-unique cats. In fact, cats have more unique looks to their name than any other family except ravagers (which are a bit of a special case).
The white lion look of Echeyakee and Sian-Rotam is not technically unique, but it comes close! Both white lions are spawned through quests. The quest to spawn Sian-Rotam was recently opened to both factions, but the quest to spawn Echeyakee is still available only to Horde characters -- which makes taming him a real coup for Alliance hunters.
Similarly, although there are two white cats with aqua stripes, one is rare and one is spawned by the same quest that spawns Sian-Rotam.
Rounding out the lion trifecta, and also not quite unique but still worth a mention, is the classic tawny lion. These lords of the savannah can only be found in the Barrens or, if you don't mind tracking down a rare, on the Rake of Mulgore.
The red lynx look, while spread among three cats, is definitely worth mentioning. It can only be found in the Blood Elf newbie area of Eversong Woods at very low levels.
Similarly, pure white cats can be found only in Winterspring and nowhere else.
White tigers with black stripes also occur in Winterspring, and also on the elite (and very distinctive) King Bangalash.
And finally there is the dappled white look of the snow leopards and the Ghost Saber. Snow leopards can only be found in the Dwarven newbie area of Dun Morogh, at very low levels, which makes them fairly unusual. But Ghost Sabers are even more unusual: they are ghostly! These lovely cats retain their semi-translucent status even after they are tamed. The picture below doesn't do it justice, but check out the Ghost Saber Gallery for in-game shots.
Crabs
Unfortunately there are no crabs with unique looks. Rather than leave crabs out entirely though, we include here the most unusual of the crabs, the red crab. Red crabs are represented by one quest-spawned creature and one rare creature, but the only widespread red crabs can only be found in Durotar, the Orc/Troll newbie area.
Crocolisks
Like crabs, crocolisks do not have any unique appearances. The most unusual look for crocs is the white croc.
Dragonhawks
There are so few dragonhawks that all of them qualify as unusual appearances. But only one dragonhawk look is truly unique: the Eclipsion Dragonhawk of Shadowmoon Valley.
Of the otyher dragonhawk looks, orange dragonhawks are restricted to Eversong Woods and red dragonhawks only occur in very high level dungeons.
Gorillas
Gorillas tend to be somewhat uncommon pets for hunters, perhaps because they are not available for taming until the mid-levels. But Uhk'loc, the icy white gorilla fron Un'Goro Crater, is truly unique!
Black and grey gorillas are seen more frequently in the wild, but only in one place: Stranglethorn Vale.
Hyenas
The red hyena is the only unique hyena look, as well as being perhaps the most distinctive hyena. Scarlet Tracking Hounds are only found inside the Scarlet Monastery. Scarlet Hounds in the Western Plaguelands share this look, but unfortunately they cannot be tamed.
The hyena family also contains two relatively uncommon appearances as well. Black hyenas can only be found in Desolace, unless you get lucky and run across the very rare Galak Packhound. And yellow hyenas can only be found in The Barrens, unless you are on the quest that spawns a Maurudine Bonepaw.
Nether Rays
As with dragonhawks, there aren't really enough nether rays for any of their appearances to be considered common. But there is only one unique nether ray: the gorgeous red Netherskate. Unfortunately, this unique creature has inferior caster stats.
Owls
The Burning Crusade expansion added several new looks for owls, including two unique looks: the Avian Darkhawk and Avian Ripper, both of Sethekk Halls. Each is listed twice here because they occur in both normal and Heroic versions of the dungeon.
Although not strictly unique, the purple owl look is also fairly unusual -- and quite distinctive!
Raptors
The Burning Crusade expansion also added several new looks for raptors, including these unqiue spiky variants.
Black outland raptors are not truly unique, but they can only be found in the Blade's Edge Mountains.
Outland raptors aside, most of the old Azeroth raptors are fairly widespread. But there is one unqiue look, the obsidian raptor Goreclaw.
It is also worth mentioning the grey and dark green raptors. Although neither are unique, both are fairly uncommon. In addition, the dark green raptors are the only ones who do not wear jewelry and feathers.
Ravagers
The ravager family has the unique honor of being the only pet family made up entirely of unique or nearly unique appearances.
Scorpids
There are no scorpids with truly unique looks, but the beige scorpid comes close. Beige scorpid can only be found deep in the orc newbie area of Durotar, so taming one of these makes for an interesting trip for non-orc hunters.
The blue scorpids of the Barrens are also quite interesting. These beautiful specimens appear in only a small, concentrated area and are easy to overlook.
Serpents
The serpent family has the distinction of being made up almost entirely of Elite creatures hidden away in dungeons, so none of their appearances are really widespread. The three serpent looks listed here, however, are completely unique.
Spiders
Spiders come in a lot of different looks, and several only occur in one or two zones. But there is only one truly unique spider appearance: Zarakh, the giant black spider of Bloodmyst Isle.
Although the giant orange spider look isn't truly unique, it might as well be: Deathskitter is a hard-hitting, hard-to-tame elite who happens to be immune to Frost Traps.
Likewise, although Naraxis shares an appearance with the Razzashi Broodwidow, the latter can only be found in Zul'Gurub, a raid zone. And Naraxis herself is rare, making this spider look pretty uncommon.
Jungle spiders are more widespread, but can only be found in the Dustwallow Marsh.
Similarly, magma tarantulas are confined to the Searing Gorge.
Sporebats
Like dragonhawks, there just aren't enough sporebats to make any of their looks terrbly widespread. Of the three sporebat looks, two of them only occur on one creaure.
Tallstriders
Tallstriders have three of the most attractive -- and gaudy! -- unique appearances in the game.
In addition, the classic grey and ivory tallstriders are slightly more common -- but only in Mulgore and the Barrens.
Turtles
The turtle family does not contain any truly unique looks, but there are two unusual looks worth mentioning. The class green turtle can only be found in Hillsbrad and deep in the Blackfathom Deeps dungeon; the pretty grey and pink turtle appearance is limited to the coast of Dustwallow Marsh plus one rare turtle in the Hinterlands.
Warp Stalkers
Warp stalkers only come in two varieties: one of those is unique and the other is restricted to Terokkar Forest.
Windserpents
The Burning Crusade expansion added a number of unique pet appearances, including these two spiky windserpents.
The blue outland wind serpent isn't properly unique, but it is relatively unusual.
The black Azerothian wind serpent also deserves a mention here. Although this look is shared between the Deviate Dreadfang and the Soulflayer, neither is terrible widespread or accessible.
Wolves
Most wolves are fairly widespread, but there are two appearances that are completely unique: Ironjaw and Old Cliff Jumper. Old Cliff Jumper is a particularly interesting wolf to track down, since he's rare, but Ironjaw is much more visually distinctive.
In addition, the white worg appearance is also fairly unusual, since it can only be found on three rare creatures or in the Alterac Valley Battleground.
... and More!
If nothing on this list is quite what you were looking for, you might also check the pet family pages for looks that occur only at low levels. For brevity's sake we haven't listed them all here, but there are quite a number of pet appearances that are widespread in low level zones but almost never seen on high-level hunters.
