Do some pets still have higher base DPS, health or armor?
Yes, but which pets have which stats has completely changed.
Stat modifiers used to be based on family: cats had high damage, bears had high health, and so on. But now the stats are related to the talent tree instead. So all pets that use the Ferocity tree have high damage, and all Tenacity pets have high health.
You can find the stat modifiers on the WotLK Pet Talents page.
Do pet stats still scale with hunter stats?
Yup, and stamina scales even better than it did before. Pets now get about 45% of the hunter's total stamina added to their own (instead of only 30% as they did before).
In addition, it seems that pets now benefit from the hunter's hit rate and critical rate, although I do not have any numbers for that yet.
What about pets with "caster" stats?
"Caster" stats are gone! The beasts that used to have caster stats still have a mana bar in the wild, and they will use it to cast spells at you when they attack. But once you tame these beasts, all of their stats become exactly the same as a regular pet of the same level.
What is this about auto-leveling? What happens if I tame a low-level pet?
When you tame a new pet that is more than five levels below you, it automatically levels up to be exactly five levels below you. For example, when a level 70 hunter tames a level 23 cat, the cat immediately levels up to 65 when the tame completes.
If you tame a pet that is five or less levels below you, then the pet keeps its level. For example, a level 70 hunter that tames a level 66 raptor still has a level 66 raptor when the tame completes.
Will my stabled pets level up too?
Yes! At this point in the beta, stabled low-level pets will update their level when they are removed from the stable. For example, let's say that my level 70 hunter has a level 61 ghost saber in the stable. When I open the stable interface, the ghost saber shows up as a level 61 pet. But as soon I pull the ghost saber out of the stable, it automatically and immediately levels up to become level 65.
Does the low-level pet get all the right skills? Does it get all its talent points?
Yup! A level 23 cat that is auto-leveled to 65 is exactly identical to a cat that you leveled to 65 before the expansion, or one that you tamed that was already level 65.
